Arranged marriage

Aranged mariege was once a common thing. It was accepted and practiced without much scrutiny. It has fallen into disfavor. It is not commonly practiced.

Greg and Gloria foster were a bit old fashioned. They home schooled there kids. They had a fairly large family. They decided to arrange the mariege of there children. This was understood and accepted. To them it seemed normal. There two oldest son had been married in this fashion. They were successfully marieges.

Now it was time for there third son James to be maried. James had gone to Bible school and now was pastoring a small church. He was showing signs of sprituel growth and maturity.

Given that his marriage would be handled by his parents ,he focused his time at Bible college on preparing for ministry not trying to pair off. He was fine with that. He trusted his parents. They decided that now that he was established in ministry it was time to have him get maried.

James had no role in this process. He did not even know that they were trying to find a wife for him. They spoke to  various friends of there’s. They were carefully trying to vett the potential wife and her family. They left no stone unturned. They looked and after prayer, they believed that they had found someone. They were very pleased with the choice.

One day his Perents asked him to drop by there house. He had no idea why. That was not that out of the ordinary. He had lunch with them.”son we have something to tell you.” His mom said. “OK! “He Said. “We have been looking for a wife for you. “She said.”I was not aware of that.” He said.,”yes . We wanted to surprise you and we wanted to be able to make a decision without interference”his dad said. “Of course I understand. ” He said. ” Good. We have found someone. ” She told him.

He was really surprised By this. He had no idea that they were looking. He was also surprised that they found someone.  ” Her name is Jenny . She is quite lovely. I think you will  really like her. ” his mom said.  “She comes from a good family. I think she will be a really good match for you. ” His dad said.

He was totally Schocked. He believed that he would be maried. He had not given it a lot of thought. He focused on other things like his ministry. Now that his parents had chosen someone for him to Mary he was curious. What was she like? Would they be compatible? Would he like her? Would she like him. He could not get her out of his mind. He was excited. No one would he be going though life alone. He would have a partner a company ion a helper. Who was she.

The way the arrangement was ,he would not meet her until the weeding day.all he knew was her name. Other then that,he really did not know much about her. Really he knew almost nothing about her. His Perents liked her. He trusted there judgement.

He tried to get his house ready for her. The church did not have a paersnege. He owned a house. It had some land. He hoped she would like it. He had no idea what she was like. He knew nothing about her personality. Nothing about her interest.

The time of the weeding had arrived. He was not allowed to see her until the weeding. He was usually calm and collected . He was 23 years old but acted like he was 53 years old. His usual calmness was replaced. He had a  thousand different emotions all at once.he did know that by the end of the day he would be maried. He would meet his wife.

He had heard that she was in the building. He was kept in another part of the church. “Are you ready?” His best man asked. “I am not sure. I think so!” He said. The two went to the main part of the sanctuary. He knew those airing on the groom side. He did not know hardly know anyone on the bride side. He was not expecting to.

The music began to play. Various members of the party arrived. Then the wedding march went up tempo. There she was. She had brownish hair. She was five six. He imagined that she was probably In her early twenties. She seamed younger then him. At five nine he was taller then him. He did not care if he was taller but did take that into account.when the farther of the bride gave her to him.he took her hand. There eyes met for the first time. His heart raced. He wondered what she was thinking. He wished he knew. They went though the vows.the pastor declared them husband and wife.

She ones over. He nervously kissed her. The two kissed.  The ceremony was concluded. ” Hi there! I’m your husband!” He said. She chuckled. “I guess so! Hello my husband!”she said. She took his hand. They walked out to the reception area. The reception went well. He still felt that he knew next to nothing about her. He had not gotten to say much to her.

After quite a while, the two prepaired to leave. They went to her car. Her sister was put in charge of making sure that her stuff made to his to there house. They went to the car. “So where are we going?” She asked. “I got a cabin in Vermont. Is that OK?”he asked. “Yea sounds good.”he said. He opened the door to the car for her. Then he got in. He had a CD of hyms playing.  They were instrumental. She was not much for hyms or instrumental music.

“So what do you do? “She asked. ” They did not tell you. I am a pastor. I pastor a small church. “He said. “I am a pastor too!”she said. “You are?”he asked. “I thought you knew. I pastor Trinity united Methodist Church. ” She said. “Oh I figured you were independent fundimental Baptist. ” He said. “I assumed you were united Methodist.”she said.

“Let me guess you voted for Hilary?”he said.”I did. Did you vote for Trump?”she asked. ” Yes I did. Reluctantly but yes. I really wanted Ted Cruz but it did not happen.”he said. ” Your King James only right?” She remarked. “I am.”he said. ” You only sing hymns. ” She asked.”true. You observe lent?”he asked. “I do. “She said. They had trouble carying on a conversation.

The drive took a few houses. ” Look can I change the music?” She asked. ” OK!” He said. She put on k-love. It was a CCM station. He was not really happy with it but decided to let it go.he supposed it would take ajustment for the both of them.they did not say much to each other for a while. He was starting to wonder what he had gotten himself into.

Why would his Perents pair him off with a Methodist minister. It made no sense. Yet hear he was. He was not sure how this going to go.

End of part one.

To be honest, I’d doubt that his parents would. I’m so used to seeing stories about parents choosing spouses that are their ideological clones. The Duggars, for example, aren’t interested in marrying off their daughters to a Methodist; they want their daughters to marry someone who is a close example of their father; into having big families / same denomination / same beliefs – that way heaven is assured. You note though, that there’s this expectation of : “marry now, fall in love later” … the thing is, that’s not how the story tends to go. Kids from the courtship movement / betrothal movement / arranged marriage movement suffer just as high (if not higher) divorce rates because even if you throw two people together, you can’t make them fall in love any more than you can make a horse drink. You can only threaten them with loss of salvation if they even think of divorce.
